My artwork relies heavily on storytelling. I frequently concentrate on the strange details that make up everyday life and alter them with a touch of dream-like surreality. Lost Together is a new body of work, a series of narrative paintings inspired by my young son who is autistic. The paintings explore a wilderness of emotions that I feel as a parent of a child with autism. The dream-like jungle that is present in every piece represents the wonder of my child?s mind and the unique challenges it brings. The pattern, color and texture in the jungle is meant to be equal parts playful as well as all-consuming.
I was formally trained as a printmaker at school, and the amount of planning intrinsic to printmaking as a medium still heavily influences my artistic process. Each painting is meticulously planned out, and every composition is sketched before transferring the outlines to canvas. I digitally color my sketches to help plan out color decisions in advance, and refer to the colored sketches while painting. I work with a limited palette and mix each color carefully in large jars and paint in each shape in layers, building up the canvas from light to dark.
